Description: |
Ascending to suberect perennial herb 20–40 cm tall, with annual stems growing from a small woody rootstock and short tuberous roots. Stems single, purple, sparsely branching above, shortly hairy. Leaves mostly in the midle part of the stem and longest, narrowly oblong-elliptic, 3–9 cm long, sparsely shortly hairy above; strigose beneath, particularly on the veins; margin subentire or with widely spaced teeth. Capitula solitary at the end of each branch; branches up to c. 6 cm long, together forming a lax cymosehead. Involucres up to 10 mm long and slighrly wider than long. Bracts many-seriate, finely tapering to a bristle tip, very narrowly lanceolate, hairy. Florets c. 70 per capitulum. Corollas purple, 5–6 mm long. Achenes subcylindric to narrowly turbinate, 1.5–2 mm long, more or less quadrangular and narrowly ribbed on the angles; pappus 2-seriate, outer reduced to a low rim of small lacerate scales, inner of caducous brown barbellate setae 1–2 mm long. |
