Description:
Erect or sometimes scrambling, weak-stemmed shrub up to 5 m tall. Branches 4-angled, hairless or with a floccose whitish or fulvous indumentum towards the apices when young; flowering branches slender, sometimes pendulous; bark brown with prominent lenticels. Leaves opposite more or less closely spaced on the upper part of the flowering branches, sessile or almost so, broadly elliptic to orbicular or oblanceolate or oblong-oblanceolate, 3–22 cm long, usually hairless or very sparsely pubescent above and more hairy beneath with short whitish hairs; margin entire or serrate-dentate in the upper broader part of the leaf with teeth 12-14 on each side. Inflorescence forming a terminal leafy laxly-spreading open panicle, up to c. 30 cm long; peduncles filiform and wiry, lowermost 6.5–12 cm long, purple, hairless or sparsely shortly hairy; bracts linear; pedicels c. 6 mm long, glabrous or sparsely hairy. Calyx 3–5 mm long and 4–5 mm wide, reddish-purple, usually hairless, sometimes minutely pubescent; lobes ovate-triangular to oblong or semicircular, shorter than the tube. Corolla usually with the four lateral lobes pale greenish, bluish-green, creamy-green or greenish-violet, and the median lobe deep violet, blue or purple. Fruit ovoid, 7–9 mm wide and 5–6 mm long, glossy, red, reddish-brown or bronze-brown.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: quadrangulata: 4-angled, quadrangular.
Habitat: Along margins of evergreen forest, riverine forest, in wooded gullies and also in high-rainfall woodland or on termite mounds.
