Description:
Erect shrubby herb, 6–45 cm tall, with many stems from a woody rootstock, flowering after burns. Leaves erect, pressed to the stem, 2–4-foliolate; leaflets obovate to oblanceolate-oblong, 4–13 mm long, somewhat falcate, rather thick, hairless, 3–6-veined from the base; petiole and rhachis together mostly 2–4 mm long, with a line of hairs beneath; stipules obovate-oblong or oblong-elliptic, leaf-like, 6-18, obliquely appendaged at the base on one side, persistent. Inflorescences axillary, several-flowered; peduncle 1–1.5 cm long, sparsely pubescent or hairless; pedicels mostly 2–4 mm long; bracts 2-lobed, persistent, some 3-partite, corresponding to 2 stipules and a reduced leaf. Calyx 2-lipped, the one 2-toothed, the other 3-toothed. Standard yellow or orange, 10–13 mm long. Fruit reflexed, with 1 or 2 articles joined by a very narrow neck, each article more or less semicircular, 6–8 × 5–7 mm, hairless; margin somewhat thickened.

Habitat: Seasonally burnt montane grassland.
Altitude range: 1750 - 2400 m

Worldwide distribution: Southern DRC, southern Tanzania, northern Malawi and northeastern Zambia.
