Description: |
Shrub or woody herb up to c. 3 m tall, with wrinkled blackish or purplish-black woody stems. Leaves ovate, ovate-lanceolate or ovate-oblong, 6–21 cm long, acute to, appressed rusty hairy above and on the characteristic reticulate venation beneath; petiole 0–1.5 cm long, rusty velvety; stipules large, with c. 6–10 linear-lanceolate brown hairy setae 0.2–1.5 cm long from a variable base 3–8 long and wide; these bases connate and forming persistent cups at the nodes on old stems. Inflorescences branched, 2.5–15 cm wide; peduncles up to 1.5 cm long, velvety pubescent. Calyx tube hairy, 1.5–3 mm long; lobes linear, subequal, 0.3–1.2 cm, hairy outside, more or less equalling the length of the corolla tube. Corolla musky scented, white, often tinged pink, or entirely pinkish, hairless or pubescent; tube 0.5–1.4 cm long; lobes 3–7 mm long, the tips thickened and inflexed. Fruit 4–6 mm long and wide, the persistent calyx lobes often reflexed. |

Habitat: | Montane forest, particularly at margins with grassland, scrub, Pteridium-Protea-Kotschya thicket, on streambanks, at edges of bogs and in more or less open ground. |
