Description:
Robust herb growing from a subglobose or turnip-shaped tuber. Leaves up to 1.2 m tall, divided 3 times with primary divisions up to 60 cm wide, hairless; ultimate leaflets, elliptic to oblanceolate, up to 13 cm long; petiole 20-52 cm long, green tinged purplish and with greenish-white spots; pulvinus swelling near the base hidden by cataphylls, reddish to deep wine-red within. Inflorescence solitary, mostly before the leaves; peduncle 3-25 cm long, hairless or pubescent. Spathe 7.5-12 cm long; tub subglobose, constricted apically; limb broadly oblong-elliptic, up to 9.5 cm long, reflexed at maturity, green with a purple tinge or reddish-brown. Spadix 4-5-12 cm long; female zone more or less cylindric; male zone clavate, up to 9.5 cm long, creamy-yellow.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: clavatus: clavate or club-shaped, referring to the male part of the spadix.
Habitat: In open Brachystegia woodland, disturbed woodland and at margins of streams
