Description: |
Erect perennial herb. Stems to c. 1.3 m tall arising from a rosette of narrowly oblanceolate to ovate-elliptic basal leaves; cauline leaves 1-5, smaller than the basal, sessile and clasping the stem, grading into the bracts of the synflorescence. Capitula sessile, crowded into glomerules, 1.2 - 3 cm in diameter; each glomerule subtended by ovate leaf-like bracts. Florets 4 per capitulum. Phyllaries with sharp apices and membranous margins. Corolla mauve. Achenes c. 10-ribbed, minutely bristly mainly on the ribs; pappus of 7-10 objects, each scale-like below, tapering into a bristle above. |
