Description:
Perennial herb up to 2 m tall, rarely taller, growing from a horizontal rhizome. Stems annual, much branched, shortly and retrorsely hispid, often reddish. Leaves ovate or elliptic, 12–20 cm long, becoming progressively smaller to the apex, shortly and sparsely hispid on both surfaces, obtuse to subcordate at base and suddenly decurrent on the petiole; petiole mostly up to 13 cm long, sheathing at the base, upper leaves often sessile. Inflorescence of short racemes arranged in terminal bracteate panicles; bracts ovate to lanceolate, acute. Flowers with pedicels 2–4 mm long. Calyx appressed-pubescent outside, hairless inside. Corolla usually blue, often with reddish-purple throat, sometimes all whitish. Fruit on usually reflexed pedicels up to 17 mm long, 10–12 mm in diameter, more or less uniformly covered with 0.5–0.6 mm long bristles.

Habitat: At margins of evergreen montane forest, along streams and in montane grassland.
Altitude range: 1980 - 2440 m

Worldwide distribution: Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Restricted to higher mountain areas.
