Description:
Annual herb up to c. 50 cm high, branching from the base. Leaves ovate, 2-7 cm long, margin serrate. Inflorescences with both male and female flowers, usually less than 2.5 cm long. Female bracts per inflorescence 1-3; bracts crenate; the few-flowered male portion pedunculate with flowers often reddish.
Notes: This species is part of a closely related group, including A. crenata and A. indica.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: In alluvium and black clay soils on floodplains, in pans and moist grassy areas, on rocky outcrops, inmiombo and mopane woodland, often as a weed of cultivation and disturbed ground.
Altitude range: Up to 1500 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Widespread in tropical Africa, Namibia and Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
