Description: |
Shrub or small tree. Leaves imparipinnate with 8-12 pairs of squarely oval leaflets and a terminal leaflet. leaflets covered in soft, weakly spreading hairs. Flowers wine-red in compact short racemes. Fruit a small cylindric pod, splitting and twisting when ripe. |

Derivation of specific name: | lyallii: uncertain. Possibly named after Robert Lyall (1790-1831), a Scottish botanist and collector in Madagascar where the type was collected. Also possible is David Lyall (1817-1895), another plant collector in Madagascar. |
