Description:
Saprophytic terrestrial, up to 70 cm. Stems purple-brown when young, turning greyish with age. Leaves 3, purple-brown, bract-like. Inflorescence lax, up to 20-flowered. Sepals linear, purple-brown, semi-erect, reflexed at the tips. Petals yellowish-purple, overlying the column but curled back at the tips. Lip 3-lobed, pointed, densely papillose, white, yellowish near the base. Spur up to 5 mm, slightly bulbous near the apex.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: subsaprophitica: nearly saprophytic.
Habitat: In miombo, mixed deciduous and mopane woodland, on sandy and loamy soils.
Altitude range: 800 - 1600 m
Flowering time:Nov - Dec
Worldwide distribution: DRC, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
