Perennial bulbous herb, growing an annual rosette of leaves and a cylindric inflorescence on a fleshy stem. The inflorescence is typically topped by a second, smaller rosette of leaves. |

| Derivation of specific name: | autumnalis: in autumn, referring to the flowering time. In fact not appropriate to these plants, which in our region usually flower during the height of the summer rains. |
| Habitat: | A species of vlei margins and grassland, woodland and moist rocky terrain, mostly in the wetter parts of the country. |
