Description: |
Slender annual sedge, 2-30 cm tall, with minute reddish-brown roots. Culms triangular, hairless. Leaves 1-6 cm long, scabrid on the margins and midrib; sheaths dark purple. Inflorescence a dense head of 3-12 crowded spikes, green variegated with reddish-brown. Involucral bracts 2-10, leaf-like, largest 1.5-6 cm long. Glumes 2-3 mm long, reddish-brown with a green mucro, giving the flowerheads a spiny appearance. Nutlet obovate, obscurely triangular, c. 0.6-0.3 mm, with 8-15 rows of tubercles on each side. |
