Description:
Robust tussock-forming perennial with short rhizomes and sometimes with looping stolons; culms up to 210 cm tall, 3.5–8 mm in diameter at the base, stout, erect, branched below or unbranched; basal leaf sheaths chartaceous, glabrous to densely long-pilose near the margins, terete, persistent; leaf laminas up to 60 cm × 8 mm, flat or folded, glabrous, the midrib forming a broad white line above, harshly scabrid on the margins, tapering to a long filiform apex.Panicle 25–35 cm long, linear-lanceolate; primary branches not in whorls, 3–10 cm long, appressed or diverging, spiciform, smooth or scaberulous, eglandular, the spikelets densely packed along their whole length.Spikelets 1.8–2.6 mm long, pale green; inferior glume 4/5 as long to as long as the spikelet, lanceolate, 1-nerved, scabrid on the nerve, acute at the apex; superior glume equalling or a little shorter than the inferior, narrowly ovate, 1-nerved, scabrid on the nerve, acute at the apex; lemma similar to the superior glume; anthers 3, 0.9–1.4 mm long.Grain 0.7–1 mm long, narrowly elliptic, square or oblong in section.
