Quarter degree square: 1134A3 Country: Malawi Habitat: Evergreen forest, rocky outcrops and some fire induced montane grassland. Altitude range: c. 1750m Annual rainfall: Location (short): Isolated mountain on North Viphya Plateau, western Nkhata Bay District Location (detailed): |
Copied from Dowsett-Lemaire in Bull. Jard. Bot. Nat. Belg. 59(1/2): 37-38 (1989):
The forest patch on Choma follows the narrow crest (oriented west-east) at 1750 m. It is 900 m long but no broader than 70 to 100 m. There are no emergents above the canopy (25 m high).
Chrysophyllum is the commonest large tree by far, followed by Grewia mildbraedii. The latter was in ripe fruit in early November. Cola chlorantha (in flower then) is widespread in the understorey, to a height of 10-15 m. The abundance of saplings of Strombosia scheffleri is striking. A strong climber, Rhoicissus tomentosa, is a lowland element common in southern Malawi but not recorded elsewhere in the north.
