Description of the genus

Unarmed climbing shrubs. Branches with coiled tendrils. Stipules subulate, caducous. Leaves alternate; lamina with nerves arranged pinnately, margin entire. Inflorescence a 1-several-flowered pedunculate axillary umbel. Flowers bisexual. Sepals 5. Petals 5, white to yellowish-green, cucullate. Disk flat, filling the receptacle, annular. Ovary inferior, 3-locular. Fruit a capsule, splitting into 3 tardily dehiscent cocci. Seeds 3; testa black, shining.

Worldwide: 5 species in the tropics: 3 in southern Africa, 1 Madagascar and 1 in NW India

Malawi: 2 taxa.
