Description of the genus

Dioecious trees. Leaves imparipinnate. Flowers unisexual, but male and female flowers appearing little different, borne in congested cymes (in ours). Calyx 5-lobed. Petals 5, free. Filaments 10, united in the lower half with anthers inserted between a pair of triangular appendages. Ovary 2-3(-4)-locular. Stigma capitate. Fruit a loculicidal capsule. Seeds large, almost completely covered (in ours) by a bright red aril.

Derivation of name: from tricheilos, 3-lipped or tricha, in threes, referring to the 3-locular fruit

Worldwide: 84 species in the tropics of America and Africa

Malawi: 3 taxa.
