Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, subshrubs or shrubs. Stipules and stipels present. Leaves 1-foliolate; petiole nearly always conspicuously winged and thus appearing like a second lower leaf lamina. Inflorescences consisting of terminal or axillary false racemes or panicles. calyx 5-lobed, 2-lipped; upper lip 2-fid, composed of 2 connate lobes; lower lip 3-fid. Corolla white to purple. Ovary 2-many-ovulate. Pod 1-9 jointed, splitting transversely, borne on a long plumose stipe.

Worldwide: c. 28 weakly defined species, all tropical African apart from 1 Indo-Chinese.

Malawi: 4 taxa.
