Annual or perennial herbs. Stipules present. Leaves usually digitately 3-foliolate; lateral leaflets often much smaller than terminal. Inflorescence terminal, but often leaf-opposed and appearing axillary, racemose or subumbellate, 1-many-flowered. Calyx 5-lobed, the upper 4 united higher up than the lower lobe, which is often narrower. Standard usually ovate or obovate with a short linear-oblong claw. Stamens all united in a tube; anthers dimorphic. Pod oblong, slightly inflated. Seeds usually numerous. Worldwide: 120 species, mostly in South Africa, extending to the Mediterranean region and India Malawi: 3 taxa. |
