Description of the genus
Annual herb, or rarely small shrub, much branched, erect, glabrous or pubescent. Leaves opposite or verticillate, entire or dentate. Inflorescence raceme-like or flowers axillary, solitary or paired. Calyx 4–5-lobed, lobes ovate to lanceolate; corolla regular, rotate, 4-lobed, throat bearded, lobes obtuse, subequal. Fruit a capsule globose or ovoid. Seeds numerous, angular. Worldwide: 20 species native to tropical America, one species common in the Old World. Malawi: 1 taxon. |
