Description of the genus

Herb, annual. Leaves sessile, opposite, entire, 1-nerved, exstipulate. Flowers in terminal regularly dichotomous dichasia. Sepals 4, (2) 3 (4)-fid, united at the base, persistent; petals 4, white, united with the stamen filaments to form a very short tube. Fruit a 4-locular 8-valved capsule with 2-seeded loculi, the seeds partially separated by an enlarged false septum. Seeds small, with scanty endosperm.

Worldwide: Three species in tropical Africa.

Malawi: 1 taxon.
