Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence of 1-many digitate 1-sided racemes bearing spikelets on a flat or triquetrous rhachis. Spikelets 1-flowered with a rhachilla-extension, sessile, laterally flattened, alternate in 2 rows, usually golden-brown, disarticulating above the glumes. Glumes subequal, keeled, enclosing the florets, obtuse or rounded at apex. Lemma much shorter than the glumes, membranous, obtuse or acute at the apex, rarely with a short mucro.

Worldwide: 9 species occurring in tropical Africa and Java to Australia
