Description of the genus

Strongly aromatic, usually canescent, herbs or subshrubs. Leaves alternate, deeply pinnately dissected (in ours). Capitula small, numerous, usually pendulous, heterogamous with female ray florets and bisexual disk florets, or homogamous with female ray florets 0. Phyllaries few-seriate with membranous margin. Pappus 0.

Derivation of name: from the Greek goddess Artemis.

Worldwide: c.350 species in north temperate zones, S America and southern Africa.

Malawi: 1 taxon.
