Annual or perennial herbs, bearing indumentum of short-stalked, long-armed, symmetrical T-shaped hairs. Leaves opposite, alternate or opposite below and alternate above, simple; green above, white-arachnoid-felted beneath; base often cordate or semi-amplexicaul. Capitula laxly arranged in corymb-like cymes or in small clusters, homogamous, discoid. Phyllaries in 2-many series, imbricate. Corolla purple to mauve, 5-lobed. Pappus (in ours) 0 or composed of a few sparse caducous setae.Similar to Vernonia, but Gutenbergia spp. have a white underside to the leaves and the pappus is either 0 or poorly developed. Worldwide: 25 species in tropical Africa. Malawi: 1 taxon. |
