Description of the genus

Perennial herbs or subshrubs, usually with several stems from a woody rootstock. Leaves in whorls of 3-5(-6) or opposite, shortly petiolate (in ours). Inflorescences axillary, few-flowered. Calyx tube campanulate or subspherical. Corolla tube usually cylindric; lobes 5(-9). Ovary 3-4(-9)-locular. Fruit glabrous, containing 1-3(-9) pyrenes.

Worldwide: 40-50 species in tropical Africa

Malawi: 9 taxa.
