Foetid, annual or perennial, erect herbs. Leaves opposite or subopposite, petiolate; lamina variable in shape, the largest often sagittate or 3-lobed. Flowers solitary in the leaf-axils, pendent, white, pink or lilac. Corolla tube funnel-shaped, ± 2-lipped. Stamens 4. Fruit a dehiscent non-woody capsule with 2 sideways-directed horns at each of the angles of the apex. Seeds never winged. Derivation of name: keratos - horned, theke - a case (Gr); referring to the horned fruit. Worldwide: 5 species, tropics and South Africa. Malawi: 1 taxon. |
