Erect, biennial or perennial, herbs. Leaves simple; margin dentate, the teeth extended into long cilia. Inflorescence composed of capitate umbels, each composed of sessile flowers. Bracts well-developed, in c.2 series, forming a connate, conspicuous involucre around each head. Calyx teeth conspicuous. Petals erect, often with a sharply inflexed apex. Stylopodium not well developed. Fruit smooth or tuberculate. Worldwide: 20 species, tropical and especially southern Africa Malawi: 1 taxon. |
