Description:
Erect to decumbent, annual or short–lived perennial herb, 4–60 cm tall, often purplish tinged towards the base, hairless or sparsely to densely pubescent. Leaves ovate to subreniform or rarely narrowly elliptic, 8–40 mm long; margin more or less crenate; petiole 2–15 mm long. Flowers in lax leafy racemes on filiform pedicels 20–45 mm long. Calyx–lobes very narrowly triangular, more or less erect or spreading, 2–7 mm long, entire. Corolla 9–16 mm long, short pubescent inside, hairless or pubescent on the lobes outside. long. Capsule more or less obovoid, hairless or pubescent with prominent valves 1·5–3·2 mm long.
Notes: At least four subspecies have been described. Only subsp. trullifolia and subsp. minor Thulin have been recorded from Malawi.

Habitat: In grassland, along forest margins and on streambanks or roadsides, often in rocky places or on bare ground.
