Description:

Small tree armed with scattered straight woody spines. Leaves alternate or apparently clustered on short lateral branchlets, elliptic to ovate, hairless, somewhat yellowish-green above with venation impressed, much paler, whitish velvety beneath with midrib prominent; margin irregularly toothed or sometimes slightly lobed; petiole and lower midrib beneath sometimes reddish. Inflorescences terminal; flowers ?white. Fruit subglobose to ellipsoid, up to c. 3 cm long, golden yellow, crowned by the persistent remains of the calyx. |

This species was introduced around Chelinda camp, Nyika.The fruit is eaten by children as well as by bushbuck that frequent the camp area. The trees appear to have spread and have become somewhat naturalized. It is certainly not a problem species (yet) but its progress into the wild needs to be monitored. |
